About us

Our Editorial Board is dedicated to shaping the Principles of Technical Medicine. Since the beginning of 2023 they have been—and continue to be—deeply engaged in this dynamic and creative process, driving progress in the realization of this movement.

Chief-editor

Jouke Tamsma (2023 to date)

Dr. Jouke Tamsma is the Medical Director of the University of Twente’s Technical Medical Centre (TechMed Centre), a position he has held since 2019. In addition to his role at the TechMed Centre, dr. Tamsma continues to serve as a medical specialist at Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), where he has been an internist specializing in vascular medicine since 2000. He studied medicine at the University of Groningen and obtained his PhD at Leiden University. Throughout his career, Dr Tamsma has held various leadership positions, including Director of Medical Affairs at LUMC since 2010 and supervisory board chair and member of various healthcare organisations. 

Editorial Assistants

As editorial assistants, Jarah and Lysette help write and structure chapters, refine content and support the overall development based on their own experiences as Technical Medicine students and their internships. They also maintain communication with authors, update the website and ensure the project runs smoothly.

Jarah Kessler (2023 to date)

Jarah Kessler is a Master’s student in Technical Medicine at the University of Twente. He follows the track Medical Sensing and Stimulation and has an interest in the bioelectrical signals of the human body, as well as the (patho)physiology of the heart and lungs. As an editorial assistant for The Principles of Technical Medicine, Jarah is motivated by the goal of advancing and promoting the field. He is committed to contributing to its ongoing development and helping shape its growing role within the medical community.

Lysette Scheepmaker (2023 to date)

Lysette Scheepmaker is a Master’s student in Technical Medicine at the University of Twente, specializing in Medical Sensing and Stimulation. She has a strong interest in flow, circulation, and physiological signals. During her studies, she became involved with the Principles of Technical Medicine project as an editorial assistant, driven by her passion for innovation and her commitment to making technical medicine understandable and accessible to a broad audience, from professionals to enthusiasts.

Editorial Board Members

Marleen Groenier (2023 to date)

Marleen Groenier is an Assistant Professor at the University of Twente’s Technical Medicine department and head of the Lab for Life Long Professional Learning. She has a background in human factors psychology. Her research focuses on using sensor- and simulation technology to enhance learning and performance in healthcare education. She has also co-authored research on skill acquisition, adaptive performance and interdisciplinary expertise in medical practice, addressing challenges in complex problem-solving.  

Roel Verhoeven (2023 to date)

Dr. Roel Verhoeven is a technical physician and postdoctoral researcher at Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen, Netherlands. His work focuses on interventional pulmonology and thoracic oncology, aiming to improve diagnostic and treatment techniques for lung diseases. With expertise in medical technology and clinical applications, he contributes to innovative approaches in respiratory healthcare. Dr. Verhoeven collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes through advanced imaging and minimally invasive procedures. His work bridges the gap between engineering and medicine, driving forward the development of cutting-edge medical solutions. Currently, he is the chair of the Society of Technical Physicians (NVvTG). 

Heleen Miedema (2023 to date)

Dr. Heleen Miedema is an educational designer and expert in health technology education at the University of Twente. Joining in 1998, she contributed as a policy officer to establish the health sciences and biomedical technology programs. She played an instrumental rol in creating the Technical Medicine program, launched in 2003. As program director till 2022, she shaped the curriculum, to ensure graduates could bridge the gap between medicine and technology. Under her leadership she secured BIG registration in 2018, granting professionals independent clinical authority, and co-founded the TechMed Centre. In 2022, she served as interim dean at University College Twente (ATLAS), enhancing organizational and educational quality. In recognition of her significant contributions, she was awarded the University of Twente’s Medal of Honour upon her retirement in 2023.

Eliane Mocking-Nieuwenhuis (2023 to date)

Dr. Eliane Mocking-Nieuwenhuis is a technical physician and the Coordinator of Clinical Collaborations at the University of Twente’s Technical Medical Centre (TechMed Centre). In her role, she facilitates collaboration between healthcare organizations and the university, aiming to integrate (advanced) technical (medical) solutions into healthcare practices. Her work is instrumental in bridging the gap between technological innovation and clinical application, enhancing patient care through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Jasmina Bašić (2023)

Jasmina Bašić, MSc, is the Coordinator of External Collaborations at the University of Twente’s TechMed Research department. In her role, she facilitates partnerships between academic researchers, industry leaders, and healthcare institutions to drive innovation in medical technology. With a background in biomedical sciences, she specializes in fostering interdisciplinary collaborations that translate cutting-edge research into practical healthcare solutions. Her work strengthens the link between technical advancements and clinical applications, ensuring that research at the TechMed Centre contributes to improved patient care and medical practice.
