Clinical Practice

The aim of technical medicine is to contribute to the care and cure of patients, using a specific approach as described in chapters 1 and 2. In this section/chapter we will focus on the ingredients necessary to translate this to success in daily practice. Technical Medicine education follows the common thread in integrating medical and technical knowledge, ensuring this interplay remains central to clinical decision-making and patient-centered care. This unique integration is what defines the role of a technical physician in modern healthcare.

A fundamental principle in technical medicine is to design solutions for patients using technology. Technical physicians approach medical challenges with an engineering mindset, leveraging design methodologies and system thinking to solve complex problems. Clinical reasoning is an important competence enabling this approach. It fosters adaptability and is a prerequisite for innovation, thereby aligning with the core principles of technical medicine.Clinical reasoning is based on a thorough combined knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology on the one hand side, and a solid understanding of technique and technology on the other. We will summarize pathophysiological core concepts and then elaborate on their application across relevant subsystems. Furthermore, general aspects of physics will be addressed and related to technologies applied in medicine.

The succesful practise of technical medicine also depends on legal, ethical and professional skills and knowledge, which will be addressed in a part of this section/ chapter.

With the foundational technical-medicine Toolbox acquired through the program, technical physicians develop strong adaptive capacities and a steep learning curve, enabling them to quickly graps the working of a clinical department.

Of note, the concrete areas describing how technical medicine has reached, and is applied in, clinical practice is further described in the chapter Clusters.
